R.C. Slocum is the winningest football coach in Texas A&M history. After his last season in 2002, he had compiled a record of 123-47-2 (72.1) His 123 wins in his first 14 years ranked him 8th all-time and put him in the company of coaching legends Barry Switzer (137), Tom Osborne (137) Steve Spurrier (132) Amos Alonzo (128) and Bud Wilkerson (124). During his career at A&M, he had more than 50 players drafted into the N.F.L.
Raised in Orange, Texas, R.C. played football at Stark High School there and then played college football at McNeese State University where he is in the Athletic Hall of Fame and is a Distinguished Alumnus.
His coaching career began in 1968 at Lake Charles, La. high school. Two years later, he became a graduate assistant coach at Kansas State University. In 1971, he was named Head Freshman Coach there.
In 1972, R.C. was hired as receivers coach for Emory Bellard at Texas A&M. He coached several positions with the Aggies from 1972-80, including offensive receivers, defensive ends, linebackers, and defensive coordinator. He moved to the University of Southern California in 1981 as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.
Slocum returned to A&M in 1982 as defensive coordinator under Jackie Sherrill. In 1985, Slocum was elevated to Assistant Head Coach.
In December 1988, R.C. was named head coach at Texas A&M. During his 14 years as head coach, the Aggies never had a losing season and won four conference championships, including the Big 12 Championship in 1998. Additionally, his teams became the first in school history to post four consecutive seasons without a conference loss. He has the best winning percentage in SWC conference history, one spot ahead of the legendary Darrell Royal of Texas. Slocum was SWC coach of the Year three times.
Slocum has received numerous awards for his coaching career including the General Robert R. Neyland Award, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, and the Houston Touchdowner Award. He is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Gulf Coast Sports Hall of Fame, the National College Football Hall of Fame, and the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.
R.C. and his wife Nel, have three sons, Shawn Slocum, John Harvey Slocum and Randy Jennings, along with eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
